AI Search Optimization for Local SEO

How local service businesses get recommended by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity — not just ranked on Google.

Local SEO used to be a Google game. Win the map pack, win the leads. That game is still on, but a new one has opened up next to it: your customers are increasingly asking AI tools — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity — to recommend a contractor, a therapist, a salon, a roofer. And the AI either names you or it doesn't.

This guide is for local service business owners who want to be one of the names the AI says. It is built on what we use inside the Monstera Method to align websites, Google Business Profiles, and AI search signals into one system.

    Ranking vs. being recommended

Traditional SEO is a ranking game. You compete for position 1 to 10 on a search results page, and the user picks from a list. AI search is a recommendation game. The model reads the same web you do, picks two or three businesses, and tells the user "you should try these." Position 4 does not exist. You are either in the answer or you are not.

That changes the goal. You are no longer trying to outscore competitors on a ranking algorithm. You are trying to be the obvious, low-risk answer for a specific question in a specific city. Make it easy for the model to say your name with confidence, and it will.

Where AI tools pull local recommendations from

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity do not invent recommendations. They synthesize them from sources they already trust. For local service businesses, that almost always includes:

    • Your Google Business Profile — categories, services, hours, reviews, photos.
    • Your website — especially the homepage, service pages, and any city or service-area pages.
    • Structured data (schema) on your site — LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, Review.
    • Review platforms — Google, Yelp, Angi, BBB, industry-specific directories.
    • Local press, blog mentions, and chamber or association listings.
    • Map and directory aggregators (Apple Maps, Bing Places, Foursquare data).

The model is looking for agreement. When ten different trusted sources all say the same thing about who you are, what you do, and where you do it, you become a safe, confident recommendation.

The seven things to fix first

    1. Make your Google Business Profile match your website word-for-word

Same business name. Same address format. Same phone number. Same primary category. Same service list. AI tools cross-check these. Mismatches create doubt, and doubt gets you left out of the answer.

    2. Write service pages around real questions

Stop writing "About Our Services." Write the page that answers "best roofer in Plano for hail damage" or "marriage counselor in Frisco that takes BCBS." Use the city. Use the service. Use the qualifier the customer would say out loud to ChatGPT.

    3. Add LocalBusiness and Service schema

Structured data is a translator. It hands the model your business details in a format it can read with zero ambiguity. At minimum: LocalBusiness with full NAP, geo coordinates, opening hours, and a Service block per offer with areaServed.

    4. Stack consistent third-party signals

Get listed — accurately and identically — on the directories your industry trusts. For contractors, that is Angi, HomeAdvisor, BBB. For health and counseling, Psychology Today, Healthgrades, Zocdoc. For retail and hospitality, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Apple Maps. Same name, same address, same phone, every time.

    5. Earn reviews that mention what you do and where

A five-star review that says "great service" is fine. A five-star review that says "Travis fixed our roof in Allen after the May hailstorm" is gold. It feeds the model the exact city, service, and outcome it needs to recommend you for that exact query. Ask happy customers to mention the city and the job.

    6. Publish content the model can quote

AI tools love clean, factual, well-structured pages they can cite. Short paragraphs. Clear headings. FAQ sections that answer one question at a time. Pricing ranges where you can share them. The easier you make it for a model to lift a sentence, the more often it will.

    7. Test the AI tools every month

Open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Type the exact phrases your customers would: "best [service] in [city]," "[service] near [neighborhood] that [qualifier]." Note who gets named. That list is your real competitive set in the AI era, and tracking it monthly is the only way to know if your work is landing.

What this looks like inside the Monstera Method

The Monstera Method is built around the idea that your website, your Google Business Profile, and your AI search presence are one system, not three. We align the signals — naming, categories, service definitions, schema, reviews, citations — so a model reading any one of those sources finds the same business described the same way.

When that alignment is in place, two things happen. Your Google rankings get sturdier because the signals reinforce each other. And you start showing up in AI answers because the model has no reason to second-guess who you are or what you do.

    The bottom line

AI search optimization for local SEO is not a separate discipline. It is local SEO done well enough that a language model will repeat your name on demand. Fix the alignment between your website and your Google Business Profile. Make your service pages specific to real customer questions. Earn reviews and citations that name your city and your service. Then test it in the tools, every month, and adjust.

Do that consistently, and you will be the answer when someone in your city asks an AI who to call.
